Southern Cassowary, Casuarius casuarius, in a private nature reserve in the rainforest near Fak Fak, West Papua, Indonesia. This family owned valley is a reserve operated by the family, where they managed to attract a cassowary from the area, feeding it fruit on a regular basis, and contrary to many of their neighbours, they didn't kill and eat it. Instead they now protect the area against hunters and they have a small ecotourism business, They were very afraid of the bird and ran away quickly if it approached them. This is one of the few bird species that can be deadly also for people. If it feels threatened, it usually bolts off, but if cornered or with small chicks, it can decide to attack in self-defense. It is its kick with the clawed toes that can damage you if you are not respectful enough. The bird doesnt show up every day, and if it does, it usually hangs around only a short time.
